What is Personal Growth?

Personal growth is to gain knowledge that helps you make better choices and create meaning in life. I prefer to call it self-leadership.

Our future self is depending on our present self to develop opportunities. The truth about opportunity is that our abilities are natural opportunities, and when we gain knowledge and develop our abilities it attracts more human made opportunities.

There are only three ways to gain knowledge; Personal experience with trial and error over the years; Thinking about important topics or thinking through personal experience options; Deliberately seeking knowledge from others personally or virtually. Don't skip the list of the best personal growth books below.

While all growth processes involve the same discover, design, and deliver structure, they are all based on personal growth. The three levels of personal growth are the discipline of self, the art of fulfillment, and the science of achievement.

The Opportunity System for Personal Growth (based on my book Opportunity Truth)

Foundation of strength (personal foundation): This includes developing our identity, mindset, emotional fitness, and physical health. Our identity includes our background, worldview, character, and personality. The best mindset for anything you desire to do, is a positive growth mindset.

Art of purpose (personal purpose): This can be found in three areas, what we have faith and hope in, relationships, and engaging our strengths or our competence. This is how we create meaning in life, which helps us feel fulfilled. Purpose is a deeper level of meaning and is rooted in one or more of our faith, work, or relationships. Purpose is based on how we apply our uniqueness to the world.

Science of momentum (personal achievement): This is best built on a strong personal foundation with a sense of direction with purpose. Momentum is continuous achievements that respect the principles of goals, habits, commitment, and investments. Compound interest isn't just for money, it also applies to knowledge, health, and relationships.

While many people claim time is our most valuable resource, I feel that knowledge is our most valuable resource. Knowledge (specifically truth) is how we respect our time and make the most of it. Gain knowledge. Live better.

The more we develop our natural top 10 opportunities, the more fulfilled we feel, the more meaning we create in life, and the more momentum we build.

Our Top 10 Opportunities

I believe we have two categories of opportunities, natural and human made. Most people focus on human made opportunities, but, it is our natural opportunities that have the biggest impact on our lives, and attract human made opportunities. Our top 10 opportunities are...

  1. Identity- How we choose to view the world, and respect and apply the truth.
  2. Mindset- How we choose to respect and manage our thoughts and emotions.
  3. Health- How we choose to respect and maintain our body.
  4. Faith- How we choose to respect the unseen spiritual world that drives our emotions.
  5. Strengths- How we choose to respect and use our natural strengths or talents.
  6. Relationships- How we choose to respect, love, and communicate
  7. Goals- How we choose to respect and manage our future desires and set priorities.
  8. Habits- How we choose to respect and manage our time with our priorities.
  9. Commitments- How we choose to respect and manage our purpose.
  10. Investments- How we choose to respect our future self and our community's future.

Personal Growth Plan

Any deliberate self-improvement is good; however, to maximize the best use of your time, mind, and emotions, designing a plan to reach your goals can be priceless. Having a plan helps create self-accountability and scheduling the tasks of a plan is proven to help follow through on them.

You can download and use the one-page pdf below or create your own one-page plan by making a note of your identity or worldview, top three decision guiding values, top strengths, and record a short affirmation of who you are and how you want to show up in life to others.

Then record your top 1-4 goals with the number one lead measure or the most important action or habit that will help you achieve the goal (and consider scheduling them).

Then record your most important relationships and maybe have a specific day and time you reach out and connect with them.

Consider having a section of continued learning where you list what areas you want to learn about and the resources (books you will read or the websites or podcasts you will frequent for such learning).

Then consider finishing your personal growth plan with what you are grateful for. Then consider reading it daily, every morning to help with affirmations and visualization.

The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod provides six proven practices that help most people get their day started well including Silence (meditation), Affirmations, Visualization, Exercise, Reading, and Scribing (journalling) which spells the acronym SAVERS. Set your intentions the night before, put the alarm across the room and sleep in your workout clothes if it helps. Earn your morning shower (Hal Elrod).
